Point System | Print |

The priority of CPD is to achieve improved practice, while at the same time being of benefit to developing public relations and communication management practitioners at all levels.

CPD is a system of credits based on points earned for various activities. Activities are divided into categories to ensure development of young practitioners and a contribution to the profession by the more experienced practitioners. In other words, the juniors take the knowledge and the seniors give it.

You will be asked to sign attendance registers at all PRISA events or provide proof of attendance (certificates of attendance) at any other events which have been registered with PRISA and later with the Services Seta for CPD credits, or if you have attended overseas public relations events.

This will not happen immediately and we are starting with what we know - our own pilot CPD project. It is important that it is tested and that input is provided by you, our members.

CPD is a global trend. In South Africa, certification of practitioners is becoming a reality and this is directly linked to CPD.

Certification entails submitting yourself for a process of recognition of prior learning, on the job training, checking of your credentials and a formal assessment followed by a report and recommendation for certification to the Services Seta (Sectoral Education and Training Authority), established under the Skills Development Act.

In order to maintain the certification to practice public relations, you will be required to participate in a CPD system and earn, say, 100 points in two years.

This is to ensure that you keep yourself up-to-date with the profession. PRISA is applying to the Services Seta to be the certification body and will also manage the CPD process

CPD points will be earned through any or all of these activities:

  • Formal further education, completion of formal qualifications
  • Attendance at identified seminars, workshops, conferences
  • Courses such as time management, negotiation, etc.
  • Mentoring and coaching
  • Participation in industry and professional bodies
  • Contributions to the body of knowledge, through presentations,
publication of articles etc.
