Writing should be memorable, especially for the media. It must be purposeful, well planned and, most importantly, it should be creative. It goes without saying that possessing good writing skills is an essential tool for all communicators, yet it is often neglected. This is particularly true in South Africa where the majority of public relations professionals do not have English as their mother tongue.

The dawning of Web 2.0 has added to the importance of effective writing skills and has also brought an entirely new angle to the manner in which it is done effectively. This highly entertaining and intensive workshop is all about writing excellent English texts for the media and adding an injection of creativity. Prepare imaginative content that people will want to read, remember and respond to, thereby achieving your organisational objectives.

This practical workshop covers:

  • writing effective media releases and feature articles
  • the effectiveness of different writing styles
  • layout and structure
  • writing creative headlines and captions
  • planning and staging your own media conference
  • adapting texts for use on the Web

About the facilitator:
Peter van der Schyff is a freelance writer and communication specialist, managing his own public relations consultancy, Pringle-Scott Communication, in Johannesburg. He has established himself as an accomplished writer, proof reader and editor of English and Afrikaans texts with numerous clients.

He holds degrees in law, communication and industrial psychology. Peter is a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner (CPRP) and active member of the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA) where he has been lecturing on a part-time basis on all facets of corporate and media communication since 1987.

In 2007 and 2008 he was Chief Judge of the PRISA PRISM Awards, Southern Africa’s most prestigious awards for excellence in public relations and communication projects. He was a former chairman of PRISA’s Gauteng Region and a member of the board of PRISA. He also served on PRISA’s professional Disciplinary Committee.

In May 2010 Peter received the PRISA President’s Award for his contributions to the public relations and communication profession in South Africa. Earlier, in 1997 Peter was recognised for his presentation skills when he was named Communicator of the Year by International Training in Communication (ITC).
