No individual or organisation is immune to crisis; it can strike at any time and afflicts everyone. One just needs to look at the upheavals in the labour, mining and retail sectors in late 2012, to understand that organisations are closer to a crisis than they would like to admit. Nonetheless, communicators still have a duty to provide calm leadership and management through their communication efforts.
"Crisis communication is that public relations activity which has as its objective, the maintenance of an organisation's positive relations with its publics during a crisis, in order to ensure its future successful existence."- Lubbe
This statement clearly demonstrates the importance – particularly with the advent of social media and the notion of our global village - of crisis preparedness, planning, management and communication as key factors in managing reputation.
