No individual or organisation is immune to crisis; it can strike at any time and afflicts everyone. One just needs to look at the upheavals in the labour, mining and retail sectors in late 2012, to understand that organisations are closer to a crisis than they would like to admit. Nonetheless, communicators still have a duty to provide calm leadership and management through their communication efforts.

"Crisis communication is that public relations activity which has as its objective, the maintenance of an organisation's positive relations with its publics during a crisis, in order to ensure its future successful existence."- Lubbe

This statement clearly demonstrates the importance – particularly with the advent of social media and the notion of our global village - of crisis preparedness, planning, management and communication as key factors in managing reputation.

Topics to be covered in this workshop include:

  • Planning for crisis communication – including scenario / contingency planning, risk assessment and understanding the types of crises that may affect organisations
  • Crisis communication plan methodology - including looking at the stages of a crisis
  • Implementing the crisis communication plan
  • Crisis communication training
  • The crisis communication manager's role
  • Case study - successful crisis communication management
  • Case study - unsuccessful crisis communication management
